Bringing Real Nutrition to Families Who Need It Most.
Many food assistance programs lack one critical nutrient: protein. Meat is a major source of high quality proteins, but is expensive and perishable, so it’s not often donated to food assistance programs. Without meat in a diet or the money to buy supplements, people visiting food banks are left severely deficient in protein, minerals, and essential vitamins needed for proper physical and cognitive function.
In 2010, United Animal Health and Midwest Food Bank recognized the opportunity to help solve this problem by joining together and creating Promise for Protein.
Promise for Protein organizes logistics and provides for processing costs necessary to convert donated farm animals into packaged meat. Promise for Protein turns donated livestock into packaged, usable protein for food banks across Indiana. The Midwest Food Bank stores this converted produce until it is ready to be distributed to over 200 food banks, pantries, and shelters across the state of Indiana.
