Coinfections in A Herd Can Be Catastrophic

Eighty-six percent of the swine exhibiting clinical disease symptoms harbor more than one pathogen when sampled through United Animal Health’s Pathkinex surveillance program. This disease state, known as a coinfection, not only increases risk of disease, but severity is also compounded when combined with additional stressors, resulting in health and production losses.

Combating Coinfections Requires a Multi-Pronged Approach

Promoting resilience in the face of pathogens and stressors is critical to protecting health and maximizing genetic investment. While there are no silver bullets, using multiple interventions that decouple pathogen synergies may lead to the greatest outcomes. Successful interventions include tools that can:

  • Lower pathogen loads

  • Increase innate immunity

  • Promote gut integrity
